The patrol unit functions with three patrol teams, each with a sergeant, that patrol the campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Patrol officers are responsible for a wide variety of functions, including the primary law enforcement duties for the campus. This includes responding to all 911 calls for police services, medical emergencies or public assists, and supporting large public events. Officers also patrol on bicycle within the University community. Officers will easily ride over 25 miles per shift. Bicycle officers are responsible for answering calls for police services and monitoring pedestrian and bicycle laws. Officers on bike patrol are readily accessible to the public and have easier access to the interior of campus.

Patrol officers supply the police academy with instructors in narcotics training, criminal law, patrol and self-defense tactics and driving techniques. Additionally, patrol officers carry out the on-the-job training of new officers that graduate from the police academy.
